Tebelo (“to care”) is a South African Christian interdenominational program in its very early stages of establishment to address the growing desperate need of Southern Africa’s orphaned and vulnerable children who have to survive on their own without any parents, a number estimated to reach 10 million by 2015. Members associated with Tebelo and active in current child care programs, paid a four-day visit in June 2009 to the highly successful and internationally recognised Watoto Children’s villages program of the Kampala Watoto Church in Uganda. The six team members were Elizabeth Botha, Tebelo architect from Knysna; Maxie van der Merwe from the Pure Hope youth ministry of the Morelatapark church; Carina Goosen from the Lynnwood NG church; Becky Young from the Mabopane Foundation in North Carolina (US); Mama Mary Lwate, founder of the Mabopane Community Good Hope Organisation and Waldo Stumpf from Moreletapark church and Tebelo program leader.
